It was a true test of patience to have this delivered and then be forced to wait several days, but this Mama finally got to try her new Weed Dragon on a gorgeous albeit windy Mother’s Day. It was easy to unbox, hook-up (no Dad/man-hands needed!), and get started. I’ll admit I was a bit nervous using the spark lighter because 100,000 BTU capacity that close to my hand sounds a little scary, but it just made an impressive little “pwoof” but flamed only out of the end of the unit rather than the imagined grill-lighting-like flame cloud. The on/off knob provided enough flame control to adjust to a perfect blue blast rather than less controlled yellow flame. I didn’t think I would even need the squeeze valve, but it proved helpful in creating a short more intense blast to reach ground level seedlings through taller weeds – I think it will definitely be worth the extra cost over time. It was easy (and a bit fun) to watch the ragweed seedlings, insidious lemon balm, dandelion, vetch, crab grass, and even a few small volunteer maples wilt after 1-2 seconds of heat – definitely no need to torch until crispy. The 10′ hose is just long enough for me to be able to place the propane tank in a central spot and work in a broad area before needing to turn off the unit and move the tank.

I’ll also note that I got a few odd looks from folks passing by. In part because of the sound – think jet pack – and in part because it’s not often that you see a woman with a “flame thrower” in her front yard! 🙂

Within two days, some areas are completely withered and almost clear for planting while others, particularly where the weeds were a bit taller, will need a second go around. Yet, I don’t mind because in about one hour of flame weeding, I was able to cover areas that would have taken 5-6+ hours to properly hand weed.

A quick caution: some thatch and scattered dry material did catch fire but I was moving slowly and it was easily stamped out (no bare feet or my usual sandals). It was also quite windy, so we ended up using a watering can to follow-up and ensure that no embers remained in areas with dry material on the ground. If you’re a little nervous about fire in general and are trying to decide if this would be hazardous, simply keep a hose or filled watering can nearby and use common sense – pick up plastic plant markers/tags, tarps, landscape fabric/plastic because it will all burn if you get too close. the same with paint, so take care if you have a painted foundation.

The weeds don’t stand a chance. However, I found that holding the wand while squeezing the valve lever, caused a LOT of fatigue and fidgeting. The round, red handle at the valve is only marginally larger than the diameter of the wand. As such, the wand wants to twist easily, causing me to consciously manage my grip by switching hands. Why not sell this product with an oval, or other shaped handle? Any shape that makes it hard for the wand to twist would be great. I’d buy that add-on in a heartbeat.

If you already have problems with your hand grip, this tool will absolutely irritate those issues.

This thing is just plain awesome.

Assembly is a breeze. Hook the wand up to a propane cylinder/tank, open the tank valve, open the valve on the wand 1/8th of a turn, use the included spark lighter to ignite the pilot flame, and then spin the dial on the wand to adjust the pilot flame to the minimum level needed to ensure it stays lit as you move around. You are then one squeeze of the trigger away from a roaring (literally) 2000 degree weed killing flame.

I have mine hooked to a propane cylinder (on a wheeled cart) and the resultant flame is awesome, allowing me to cover a large area in almost no time.

So what’s not to like? Well, the big issue is that the hose is too thin and kinks way too easily, blocking the flow of the propane gas. I suppose making it thicker would add to the cost and weight, but it would be worth it. For now, you need to manage the hose carefully.

Some people complain about the wand’s weight, but hey, that’s the rugged build talking to you. 😉

The paint on the wand is also curious. Don’t fall in love with it, because it is going to burn off the wand head on your first use.

And if you are debating between this version and the somewhat less expensive version without the squeeze valve, don’t. The valve is 100% worth the price, allowing you to flame down to the pilot immediately as you reposition to another location.

Performs just as advertised and expected. Simple straightforward design works well, promises reliability over years of use.

My applications for this product are (so far) weed control, and SSB (shou sugi ban) wood-charring technique, for preserving wooden planks against sun & weather. Have used it for a few hours for both, works exactly as anticipated. This 100,000 BTU model is the smaller one (there is a 500,000 BTU monster,) but 100,000 BTU is already a very large amount of heat.

As an example: It is possible to do a light surface browning (no char) on one side of a piece of 8-foot 2×10″ douglas-fir lumber (green/moist) in under a minute. Full black charring of same area in 2 minutes or less.

Weeds don’t stand a chance against this tool. The key for effective & efficient weed control: don’t *burn the weed to ashes,* all you need to do is just *heat* it till the leaves boil briefly. This pops the cell membranes and then the water in the plant leaks out & evaporates, from the base & roots up. The plant then dies from dehydration. It takes less than a second of exposure to the full blast from the weed-dragon torch to achieve this heat level for most weeds. Charring / black / ash = no! wasting propane and you’re sealing off the plant from the water loss that is what actually kills it.

The squeeze-handle is worth every penny of the extra cost for the safety, efficiency, and convenience it adds.

I use this to finish burning off stubble of weeds and grass that I have first treated with an herbicide treatment. It is used around walkways, concrete joints, and graveled areas. It works quite well for this. This is not sold as a large, heavy-duty torch, so if you need that, go to a bigger size. We live on 2.5 acres with quite a few graveled areas, sidewalks, and driveways and this is very good for that, but I am not using it to clear things like drainage ditches.

And because I am moving around a lot doing quite a bit of spot torch work, I think this model, which allows switching between pilot light mode and full heat with a higher pressure squeeze valve, is great for that purpose. It prevents a lot of wasted gas.

There are cheaper torches, some from overseas, but this is well-made and dependable and worth the modest extra expense. There is no specified warranty period on the website: “We warrant all goods to be free of defects in material and workmanship. We repair or replace defective merchandise returned upon authorization.” So, this is real lifetime warranty against defects. There is very little to wear out and these are mostly easily replaceable standard parts if service is required. The primary specialized part is the squeeze valve/trigger.

The only thing I noticed when i first used it is it easy to accidentally turn off the pilot valve which is part of the squeeze valve assembly while holding and using the squeeze handle. If you do that, you would have to readjust and re-light after using the squeeze valve. It just takes some awareness and getting used to and not holding your hand in a way that moves the pilot valve to the closed position.

I also purchased the propane tank dolly separately, which I have also reviewed.

Update: After using for a short period, I made a minor modification that I think could be important. I noticed there is no bend/strain relief on the black hose between the propane tank and torch. I know these are standard hoses. But if the torch is stored vertically on the company’s propane tank dolly, the end of the hose connected to the torch bends sharply and begins to develop a kink in only a couple of days just from the weight of the hose hanging down. These types of propane hoses really are not designed to have a right angle bend on either end. This is not much of a problem with the hose connection to the tank, but it is definitely a weak point on the connection to the torch handle. Given enough time, the flow of gas could be affected, or worse yet, cause the hose to fail. I was able to solve this by removing the hose from the torch and installing a 4” piece of braided vinyl hose (21’’ OD and 15mm ID) over the hose and slide it into place after reconnecting the hose to the torch. It works perfectly and makes the bend a lot more gradual. I actually installed it on both ends of the hose as long as I had if off. I am sure there is something better out there, like an integral anti-bend spring at the hose ends that are usually installed on gas welding torches in order to avoid this problem. I did give feedback to the company on this, so hopefully, they will consider it and improve the design.
