You are constantly being compared to your famous and successful parents.
Unfortunately, this is also the case even when you’re a cannabis strain! Sour OG is a descendant of cannabis royalty, two strains famous for being among the best strains out there. Let’s see how this strain fares up against its award-winning parents. Sour OG is a 50/50 hybrid strain created by California seed company Cali Connection. Sour OG was formed when two legendary strains, San Fernando Valley OG (a West Coast phenotype of OG Kush) was crossed with Sour Diesel . I’m glad to say that Sour OG has inherited the best traits of its two parent strains. The fact that this strain picked up top prize in the Best Hybrid category in the Detroit High Times Medical Cup is a testament to its quality. Some may know Sour OG by its original name, i.e., 818 Headband (named after an area code in Los Angeles). Some cannabis shops still sell this strain under its original name, but it is much more commonly sold under its new name Sour OG. This strain acquired its new name as its popularity soared and it became widely used in other parts of the United States. While you might expect a 50/50 hybrid strain to produce a well-balanced blend of both sativa and indica effects, this is certainly not the case with Sour OG. The sativa effects come on fast and strong before the “crash” of its indica effects kick in a couple of hours later. Sour OG’s initial cerebral and energetic high contrasts starkly with the deep “body stone” feeling experienced later after the initial high has worn off. It is for this reason that Sour OG has often been referred to as a “one-hit-quit” strain. While Sour OG’s average THC level of between 13-17% is not as high as other more potent strains out there, it doesn’t mean that this strain isn’t hard-hitting, nor that it should be taken lightly. In fact, if you are a novice cannabis smoker it is advisable to pass on this particular strain as it is more suitable for recreational and medicinal cannabis smokers who are more accustomed to more potent strains. Sour OG’s CBD content is quite low too, coming in at under 0.02% As already mentioned, Sour OG’s initial buzz will have you feeling euphoric and happy in no time at all. Some smokers of this strain experience the “giggles” making it a good strain to enjoy with friends. However, when the inevitable crash happens later in the day, smokers find that it is accompanied by the “munchies” too, so it is probably a good idea to have some treats close to hand when this happens. A Sour OG plant is a colorful mixture of vibrant lime-green calyxes and bright orange pistils which complement the sticky milky-white trichomes covering its buds. These buds are round and densely packed together, reflecting the plant’s OG Kush heritage. Sour OG’s aroma is a pungent combination of the fragrances of both of its parent strains. An initial strong gasoline smell with skunky and sour aromas first hits the nostrils followed by the strain’s more pleasant sweet, lemony, floral, earthy and pine fragrances. Taste-wise, Sour OG’s flavors have been described as tart, with sweet and floral flavors which tantalize the taste buds. Sour OG’s sweeter notes are offset by earthier and more pungent flavors which give the strain its distinctive taste.
Sour OG is considered to be a moderately difficult cannabis plant to grow. A Sour OG plant is naturally highly resistant to mold and mildew , and it isn’t adversely affected in climates with a bit more moisture in the air. This plant grows best in a temperature range of between 68-80 degrees Fahrenheit. To get the best yield from your Sour OG plant, you will have to train the top of the plant regularly to maximize the amount of light exposure to the buds. Effective pruning of this plant will result in a dense coating of trichome-covered buds. A basic and regular feeding schedule is sufficient for this plant. The flowering period for a Sour OG plant is between 7-9 weeks with October being the ideal month for harvesting. A Sour OG plant grown indoors will produce a yield of around 16 ounces per meter squared while a plant grown outdoors will produce 19 ounces of bud per plant. Sour OG’s uplifting sativa effects make this strain a good choice for medicinal cannabis smokers suffering from mood disorders such as depression.
The deep feeling of relaxation experienced after the initial high wears off also makes this strain great for unwinding and de-stressing after a busy day.
