Plants can utilize about four times the amount of CO2 found in the atmosphere. You can make your own CO2 generator with yeast and a sugar solution. The yeast feed on the sugar and produce CO2 as a product of respiration. One bottle of yeast doesn't produce much more CO2 than an animal does by exhaling, so if you want to fill your greenhouse, you'll need many such generators. Drill a hole with a slightly smaller diameter than a length of aquarium tubing into the bottle cap of a 2-liter bottle. If you use 1/4-inch tubing, drill the hole with a 3/16-inch drill bit. Feed enough tubing through the cap so to extend two inches into the bottle when the cap is on.
Secure the tubing with a small amount of silicon sealant -- allow the sealant to dry overnight. Fill the bottle halfway with water; it should be lukewarm to avoid killing the yeast. Cover the bottle opening with an extra cap and shake the bottle to dissolve the sugar. Remove the cap and fill the bottle with more lukewarm water. The level should come to an inch below the tubing when you place the cap with the tubing on the bottle. Add one tablespoon baker's yeast and a pinch of baking soda to the bottle. It shouldn't be airtight, because excess gases in the bottle may need to escape. Place the other end of the tubing near some plants in the greenhouse. It may take up to three days, but the yeast should start producing CO2 to feed the plants.. Adding more sugar makes the generator produce CO2 for a longer length of time, but the process occurs more slowly. Adding more yeast, on the other hand, produces CO2 more quickly, but the generator will have a shorter life. The bottle could explode and cause injury if you screw the cap on tightly. If everything is being done correctly and you have a fine tuned system, then CO2 can be the one big difference in boosting your yields. Adding enhanced CO2 levels to your grow can significantly boost plant growth without having to change the way you grow. If you are looking to accelerate the grow cycles of your crops consider adding additional CO2 to your grow room. Plant growth accelerates as you increase CO2 levels up to around 1,500 PPM. Growers have observed up to a 100% increase in grow speed at 1,500 PPM. The most important and obvious benefit to your plants is the significant increase in growth that will occur, especially if the potential of your set up has already been maximised.
In addition to this, if levels of CO2 can be maintained around 1000-1200ppm then you will be able to run your grow room at a higher temperature. This can be incredibly important with growers constantly struggling to keep temperatures down and avoid temperature stress to your plants. During the vegetative growing stage adding CO2 is the biggest way you can increase the rate your plants stretch, allowing your plant to grow with a lot more vegetative grow in a much shorter space of time.
