The pot community’s ultimate salute to any personality has been naming a strain after that person. Larry Bird is one such example. Considered one of the greatest pure shooters of all time, Bird led the Boston Celtics to three NBA championships (1981, 1984 and 1986).
Gelato is an indica-dominant strain—qualities that include helping with mental and physical relaxation, treating acute pain, easing nausea and increasing appetite.
Similar to its dessert-like name, Gelato is “said to be much like sweet sherbet, with fruit blueberry and orange flavours,” notes All Bud. A cross between Sunset Sherbet and Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies, Gelato is a hybrid strain developed by Cookie Fam Genetics, a group of cannabis breeders from California.
“The strain’s body-relaxing effects have been said to help with muscle spasms, inflammation, cramping, headaches/migraines and chronic pain. If consumed late in the evening, when the body is naturally inclined to go to sleep, it is capable of assisting with insomnia or other sleep issues,” notes Marijuana Break.
As for the Gelato strain, the California breeders released many phenotypes, which help determine inherent qualities. “Phenotype number 33 is the one most often associated with the strain—hence the name, Larry Bird, the old number of the basketball player,” notes Marijuana Break.
When compared to other strains, the buds of Gelato are smaller. What the strain doesn’t pack in size, it packs in looks. “Her buds tend to bloom in dark purple hues, illuminated by fiery orange hairs and a shining white coat of crystal resin,” informs Leafly.
But don’t be fooled by its sweet (smelling and tasting) face; this strain packs a powerful punch perhaps best avoided by the uninitiated. With a high percentage of THC—short for tetrahydrocannabinol, a cannabis compound known for causing a high upon consumption—the effects of Gelato are known to hit hard and fast.
No proof exists that Bird ever smoked weed, though that wouldn’t be a surprise as up to 80 percent of NBA players reportedly consume. Meanwhile, the basketball legend is not the only one to have a cannabis strain named after him. Other examples include Tiger Woods, Mike Tyson and Michael Phelps.
A note for first-time users: Go easy. The strain is a THC powerhouse and its effects can be overwhelming if unprepared. “The THC level of Gelato is high at about 20 percent, although some tests revealed that it can go as high as 25 percent. CBD level is about 0.1 percent, with some tests showing CBD content as high as 1.59 percent,” reports Best Pot.

Agro Couture Grows A Gluelato Strain With A Memorable and Pungent Gas/Glue Smell

New cannabis brands pop up in Washington all the time, but when I found out the Slab Mechanix crew was whipping up flower too — reviewing them for this year’s West Coast Weed Tour became a no-brainer. Slab Mechanix has a great reputation for extracting excellent cannabis oil and their flower is going to garner a similar reputation with offerings like the Gluelato strain.

This Gluelato strain was released under the Agro Couture brand name. An interesting and completely new take on a legal brand in my experience. The graphics are simple and bold, relying on a classic black and gold color-way and a lot of glass to show off their immaculate flowers. These flowers pass the eye test in every way — from he the purple highlights down to the highly visible trichome coverage.

The Gluelato strain is incredibly memorable. The Gelato and Gorilla Glue flavors are both present through various stages of smelling and smoking these flowers. It’s a perfect blend of flavors. The strain hits you quickly. It’s a powerful and euphoric feeling that makes you smile and make it quite difficult to stay on task, which makes it perfect for your nightcap.
