Marijuana Strain Types and Differences
Years of selective breeding has helped create different marijuana strains that are intended to produce specialized effects. Learn more about what causes these specialized effects below.
Many new to the cannabis world are shocked to learn that not all cannabis is created equally. Years of selective breeding has given way to an explosion of different marijuana strains that are all aimed at producing certain effects.
Apothecary Farms has cannabis dispensary locations in Denver, Colorado Springs and Pueblo with on-site experts to help guide you through the differences in strains and their effects, so that you can find the perfect strain for you.
Key Differences In Marijuana Strains
It’s important to remember that, while the below holds generally true for many, these are not hard and fast rules. Different people respond differently to different marijuana strains, and while your budtenders will help guide you in the general direction of what you’re looking for, it’s important to experiment with different strains to find what your body responds best to.
Cannabis indica plants tend to be shorter, bushier plants with wide leaves. Cannabis indica typically has higher levels of CBD, one of the hundreds of cannabinoids found in cannabis. Indica generally has calming effects, and many like it for its ability to produce a “body high”.
Cannabis sativa typically grows tall and thin, and its leaves are narrow and thin, which makes it easy to differentiate from indica. Sativas usually take longer to grow than indicas and often have more THC than CBD, which contributes to the energizing and focused “head high” that many report from sativas.
Hybrids are crosses between cannabis sativa and cannabis indica. Hybrids’ effects largely depend on the dominant strain, and therefore have a more broad range of effects.
What Causes The Difference In Marijuana Strains?
THC is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis, and is largely responsible for the euphoric “high” associated with the plant.
While it’s not psychoactive, CBD may play a role in the plant’s pain and anxiety alleviation effects.
Cannabinol (CBN) purportedly eases the symptoms and side effects of neurological conditions like epilepsy and seizures.
They are relatively new in cannabis research, and they may prove as important to the cannabis experience as the plant’s more popular elements like THC and CBD.
Terpenes play a huge role in regulating the psychoactive effects of cannabis. Different marijuana strains have different terpene counts and concentrations, and they play a vital role in creating and facilitating the experience and effects. Some of the most popular terpenes are:
