BILLIONAIRE tech titan Elon Musk has revealed he doesn’t smoke weed – but does rely on the drug Ambien to get to sleep.
The revelations came during a tearful interview where the Tesla boss “choked up” several times while discussing his tough year.
Musk was recently accused of smoking cannabis after he recently sent stock markets into a frenzy with a tweet.
He posted about how he would turn publicly-traded Tesla into a private company once its stock price hit $420.
The number 420 is famously code-slang for smoking marijuana, in reference to the date April 20, or 4/20 in US date formats.
But speaking to the New York Times, Elon Musk revealed how it wasn’t weed that inspired the number.
He said he chose the number based on a 20% growth of share price, which worked out at $419 – but he rounded up.
“It seemed like better karma at $420 than at $419,” Musk told the NYT.
He added: “But I was not on weed, to be clear. Weed is not helpful for productivity.
“There’s a reason for the word ‘stoned’. You just sit there like a stone on weed.”
Nonetheless, Musk has since been investigated by officials for his half-baked tweet – which some have described as misleading.
It’s been a tough year for Musk.
The billionaire Tesla CEO has had to explain away delays with his new Model 3 car.
And earlier this year, the SpaceX and PayPal founder was blasted for calling one of the helpers involved with the Thai cave rescue operation a “paedo” on Twitter – without any proof.
“This past year has been the most difficult and painful year of my career,” Musk revealed.
“It was excruciating.”
He said it has even taken a toll on his personal health: “It’s not been great, actually. I’ve had friends come by who are really concerned.”
Part of the problem is Musk’s insatiable work ethic – he regularly works 120-hour weeks.
“There were times when I didn’t leave the factory for three or four days – days when I didn’t go outside,” the billionaire revealed.
“This has really come at the expense of seeing my kids. And seeing friends.”
He even told how he spent the full 24 hours of his 47th birthday on June 28 at work: “All night – no friends, nothing.”
During the interview, Musk admitted to taking the sedative Ambien to help him sleep.
“It is often a choice of no sleep or Ambien,” Musk revealed.
But some Tesla board members expressed concern to the NYT that Musk’s Ambien habit is fuelling his wacky antics.

In a statement, Tesla said: “We would like to make clear that Elon’s commitment and dedication to Tesla is obvious.
“Over the past 15 years, Elon’s leadership of the Tesla team has caused Tesla to grow from a small start-up to having hundreds of thousands of cars on the road that customers love, employing tens of thousands of people around the world, and creating significant shareholder value in the process.”
Closing off the interview, Musk said he’d be willing to be replaced as Tesla boss but it’s unlikely to happen.
“If you have anyone who can do a better job, please let me know. They can have the job. Is there someone who can do the job better? They can have the reigns right now,” he said.
