The term eighth refers to the fact that it is an eighth of an ounce, but those savvy with measurements know one-eighth of an ounce is actually 3.543603875 grams. Yes, the industry rounds down.
With an eighth of weed, you’ll be able to roll two to three blunts or a handful of joints. Eighths are also known as a half-quarter or a slice.
A quarter of weed clocks in at 7 grams. A quarter-ounce of marijuana is enough for five to seven blunts and an arsenal of joints.

A half-ounce is 14 grams. This quantity is also referred to as a half or half “O.” With a half-ounce, you can roll between 7 and 14 blunts.

How many grams are in an ounce?
An ounce weighs in at 28 grams, equating to four quarters or eight eighths. Ounces are also referred to by other names like a zip or an “O.” The possession limits for most states and countries are cited in grams and ounces. Some states and countries place restrictions on how much weed you can possess at a given time and how much you can purchase per month.
A quarter-pound is 113.4 grams, which also equals 4 ounces. Quarter-pounds are often called QP for short.
The next step up from the quarter-pound is a half-pound. Weighing at 226.8 grams, a half-pound, or 8 ounces of cannabis is also known as half-pack and half-pounder.
1 pound is equivalent to 453 grams or 16 ounces, enough to put a dent in the bank account. A pound can cost up to $3,000 and can be called a pack or an elbow.
Have you ever seen or heard the term “5-gram eighth” and wondered what it means? We just identified eighths as 3.5 grams so how can dispensaries rewrite the metric system and declare eighths to equal 5 grams? Just how much is a five-gram eighth?
Five-gram eighths describe the price point for the amount of cannabis. For instance, a customer who selects a 5-gram eighth will receive 5 grams of cannabis for the price of the strain’s eighth. Any “eighth” that’s more than 3.5 grams is basically describing bonus weed.
How do people around the world weigh weed?
Every country except Burma, Liberia, and the United States uses the metric system. With different units of measurements around the globe, how do other countries weigh their weed if they’re on a different system? Most of the world has adopted the metric system. The decimal system of measurement is known as the International System of Units (SI). In short, cannabis is measured by grams no matter where you go. Beyond grams, cannabis weights outside the U.S. are typically referred to in kilograms, or 1,000 grams. One kilo, as it is often called, is 2.20462 pounds.
Order like a local
Grams may be the universal weed measurement, but what we call cannabis changes based on your location.
Countries all over the world use different slang terms to refer to marijuana. So, if you want to shop like a local, it’s best to talk like one, too. In North America, cannabis is referred to as weed, reefer, marijuana, Mary Jane and a host of other words, while other parts of the world like Australia use slang terms like “hooch” and “choof.” People in Jamaica say “dagga.” And while you’re doing some research on ordering like a local in your vacation destination, check up on the laws and regulations before you go.

No two trips to the dispensary are alike. Some days, you’ll want to stock up on a large amount of flower. Other days, you’ll only need to walk away with a gram or two.
A quarter is somewhere in the middle of that equation. It’s definitely not a small volume of weed; depending on how much you consume, you can stretch a quarter for a good amount of time. But it’s also not an overwhelming amount of cannabis, either; even if you’re not a regular consumer, it’s not like a quarter is so much weed you’ll be smoking it for the entire year.

But what, exactly, is a quarter? How is it measured? How many grams are in a quarter of weed — and how can you make sure you’re walking out of the dispensary with a full quarter to add to your cannabis collection?
What is a quarter of weed?
First things first — before we jump into how quarters are measured, let’s quickly cover what a quarter is.
Cannabis is measured and sold by weight. And when you buy weed in a dispensary, typically, the highest weight they use to measure cannabis is an ounce. Dispensary owners may buy in higher volumes, like pounds, but from a consumer standpoint, you typically won’t see a measurement higher than an ounce available for sale.
An ounce is the highest benchmark for measuring weed in a dispensary, but not everyone who walks into a dispensary is going to want to buy an ounce of cannabis. That’s why dispensaries also offer smaller volumes — which they measure out as fractions of an ounce.
So, for example, buying an eighth of cannabis is weighed out at ⅛ of an ounce. A half would be measured out at ½ of an ounce.
And so, to answer the question “what is a quarter?” A quarter is a measurement that’s equivalent to ¼ of an ounce.
What is a gram of weed?
But fractions of an ounce aren’t the only way weed is measured in a dispensary. And for good reason! There are a number of reasons people might want to buy weed in smaller quantities. Maybe they’re not regular cannabis consumers. Maybe they want to try a new strain without committing to a larger unit of measurement. Or maybe they just need a small amount for a specific occasion.
Whatever the reason, there are a ton of cannabis consumers out there who want to purchase their weed in small amounts — much smaller than an eighth, a quarter, a half, or an ounce. And for those people, there are grams.
A gram is defined as a “metric unit of mass equal to one-thousandth of a kilogram.” And while many consumers go into the dispensary to buy a single gram, it’s also the way budtenders measure out larger quantities — including quarters.
How many grams are in a quarter of weed?
As mentioned, budtenders measure out larger quantities using grams — which is why it’s so important to understand how many grams are in a quarter of weed.
Generally speaking, there are seven grams in a quarter of cannabis. Photo by: Gina Coleman/Weedmaps
If we’re being exact, a quarter contains 7.0874 grams of weed. However, it’s much more common in the cannabis industry to round down, so generally speaking, there are seven grams in a quarter of cannabis.
For reference, let’s take a look at the gram breakdown of each of the main weed measurements (again, rounding to the nearest half or whole number to keep with industry standards):
- 1 eighth = ⅛-ounce = 3.5 grams
- 1 quarter = ¼-ounce = 7 grams
- 1 half = ½-ounce = 14 grams
- 1 ounce = 28 grams
So, another way of thinking about how many grams are in a quarter is to break down the quarter into two eighths. If an eighth contains 3.5 grams, then two eighths would be 3.5 grams multiplied by two — which gives you the 7 grams you’ll find in a quarter.
How can you ensure you’re getting a quarter of weed?
Now that you know how many grams are in a quarter, let’s talk about what’s really important — how to make sure that when you buy a quarter of weed, what you’re actually getting is a quarter of weed.
There are a few different strategies you can use to determine the weight of cannabis, including getting a scale. The most accurate way to measure cannabis is, of course, by using a scale. When you buy weed at a dispensary, your budtender should weigh out the quantity in clear view; that way, you’re able to see that the amount they’re putting in the container is equivalent to the amount you asked for (and the amount you’re paying for). If your budtender does not weigh out your weed, ask them to — and if they refuse, you may want to consider going to a different dispensary. If you live in a state with pre-packaged flower and the dispensary doesn’t have a scale, you can also get a scale to use at home, both to ensure you’re getting the right quantity from your local dispensary or to weigh out any cannabis you’re growing at home. Just make sure to buy a scale that’s designed to handle weight by the gram; that way, you can accurately weigh out grams, eighths, quarters, and other quantities of cannabis.
If you don’t have a scale handy, there are also a number of weed scale smartphone apps that can help you estimate the weight of your cannabis. While these apps can help you get an estimate, they’re definitely not anywhere near as accurate as a real scale — so while they can be helpful in a pinch, they’re not an ideal way to weigh your weed.
There’s also one way you definitely don’t want to determine the weight of your cannabis, and that’s eyeballing it. A quarter of weed isn’t always going to look the same; factors like density, moisture content, and age can all impact the size of the flower — which is why trying to determine the weight of cannabis simply by looking at it is inefficient and ineffective.
Knowing how many grams are in a quarter of weed empowers you as a cannabis consumer
As a cannabis consumer, it’s important to arm yourself with the information you need to make informed decisions on how much weed you want to purchase. And now that you know that there are seven grams in a quarter of weed, you have everything you need to walk into a dispensary and buy the perfect amount of weed for you.How many grams are in a quarter of weed?
